'Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning' Interview - Jeff Hickman & Paul Barnett

Submitted by thankeeka on December 18, 2006 - 12:57pm. Exclusive Interviews

This past Thursday, Killer Betties got to sit in on a conference call with EA Mythic representatives Jeff Hickman (senior producer for WAR) and Paul Barnett (creative director for WAR and crazy British fellow). The two had a lot to share about the upcoming Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning MMORPG, and based on what they told us, MMORPG fans all across the globe will have a lot to look forward to when the game is released, especially if you love fighting other players in your MMORPGs. So settle in for a nice, long chat and see what you have to look foward to the game. Also included are some exclusive screenshots of the game only participants of the call were allowed.

Dwarf RunepriestJeff: I'm the Senior Producer for Warhammer Online. I'm the lead producer on the product. It is my responsibility to manage the overall production of the product, the overall vision, help with marketing international, I kind of do everything that needs to be done from a high level production standpoint.

Paul: I'm a waving monkey sent here from the United Kingdom. My job is to spout heresy and gibberish until the Americans make my goddamn game.

What is Warhammer all about and what makes Warhammer unique?

Jeff: So Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning is of course the new MMORPG we here at EA Mythic are working. It is a game all about war. It is set in the rich Warhammer universe, which has been around for about 25 years now. It is a war between two realms: the realm of destruction and the realm of order. In these two realms are six races which we have broken up into three racial parings. So these races are pitted against their racial enemies, for example, the Green Skins (which are made of Orcs and Goblins) are pitted against the Dwarves; the Humans are pitted against the Chaos forces of destruction; and the High Elves are pitted against the Dark Elves. So that is six races that as a player you have the opportunity to play in a neverending struggle between order and destruction in the Warhammer universe.

So the game is really a mixed game of monster hunting, questing, RvR (or Realm versus Realm warfare) where the two realms can fight against each other (player versus player) in a struggle between the two realms for land conquests, for conquests of the enemy's capital cities, and for the utter destruction and looting and pillaging of the enemy realms. Paul, do you want to add a bit to that?

Paul: (LAUGHS)

Jeff: Paul is laughing cause he has a mouthful of pizza right now.

Paul: I started to eat this enormous piece of pizza because Jeff started to talk, which generally means seven minutes of dry, dusty rubbish. It is a fascinating entry to the Warhammer IP, where great big fighters are fighting the living beejeezus out of everyone, with iconic imagery, great characters, and charge around the land, burn cities to the ground, burn the heretics, invoke chaos, rip people's spines out (in a teen friendly way), with the iconic classes being all different, including things like Witch Hunters (how cool is that?) and unique mechanics that mean that your play experience is not dull.
