'Star Trek: Legacy' (PC/Xbox 360) QA - Mad Doc

Legacy3.jpgSpace - the final frontier. To boldly go where no man has ever gone before and all that jazz. Star Trek has been around for a long time, so you should know by now the tagline. And while space may be the final frontier, the videogame frontier is the here and now, and with Star Trek: Legacy coming very soon, Star Trek is set to look back on its history by actually having you time travel to the various histories throughout Star Trek's mythology, interacting with every captain from every series. Killer Betties got to ask Mad Doc some questions about the game, and here is what they had to say.

1. The Star Trek franchise, in terms of videogames, has tackled many different genres of games. How and why did you decide to make Star Trek: Legacy a real-time strategy game?

MAD DOC: While it shares some elements of RTS games it is not an RTS. You do control more than one ship at a time, and you can independently order them to perform different tasks. But there are no resources to collect and you are able to directly control any ship at any time and actually fight each battle.

2. Renowned Star Trek writer D.C. Fontana and her partner Derek Chester created the actual story of the game. Can you shed some light on the story at the heart of the game?

MAD DOC: I don’t want to give away too many details. But I can tell you that it is an epic story, that spans three generations of Trek and we’re very happy with how it turned out. It’s a unique experience that only games could deliver.

3. For the first time ever, Star Trek: Legacy features the voices of all the captains from every Star Trek series. How were the actors approached about the project and how will players interact with these characters throughout the game?

MAD DOC: We knew early on that we wanted all five captains and we were pleased to find that they were all receptive to being a part of this special project. It is a one of kind event and we’re glad the whole gang wanted to participate.

4. How streamlined is Star Trek: Legacy, as some RTS games are more newbie friendly while others are heavily steeped in endless screens and constant micromanagement?

MAD DOC: We did away with the micromanagement and wanted to focus on ships and fleet combat. We start the player off slowly, with just one ship. Then we start to ramp it up gradually so that by the end of the game you’re commanding a task force of 4 independent ships with numerous allies.

Legacy.jpg5. Besides the PC version of the game, Star Trek: Legacy is also coming out for the Xbox 360. Typically, it is pretty hard to transfer over a RTS to the console due to controller issues. What steps have you taken to make controlling the action on the screen as easy as possible considering the controller, and how exactly are the commands mapped to the controller?

MAD DOC: Everything has been designed with the controller in mind. The controller is your direct interface with the ships. There are two control methods: one allows you to directly command the ship of your choice in combat - right down to maneuvers and the firing of weapons; the other is strategic, allowing you to issue orders for your ships to follow. Players can seamlessly mix the two however, they choose and tailor their methods to the current combat situations. It works out quite well.

6. There are four different playable races in the game (Federation, Borg, Klingon, and Romulan) – how exactly are these different races incorporated into the game? Does that mean there will be multiple stories and multiple endings – one for each race – or is it more a difficulty situation where each race represents a different difficulty level?

MAD DOC: The campaign is told from the perspective of the Federation. You get to see Star Fleet evolve over time and role play as each of the famous captains. Along the way you will encounter the most famous enemies of the Federation. However, in multiplayer you can play any ship from any race. However, for pure visceral combat there is nothing like seeing a giant four way battle with all of the famous ships from the Klingons, Romulans, Borg, and Federation slugging it out. It’s the battle royal you always wanted to see and you set it up any way you like.

7. In terms of races, are the changes purely cosmetic, or do they all offer their own unique gameplay challenges, and if so what are they?

MAD DOC: Each race has its own philosophy for ship design and this gives direction to the tactics that players use while fighting in or against those ships.

8. Is there any particular race you enjoy playing as more than the other?

MAD DOC: It would be hard to pin down a specific race as that is too broad a range. Better to talk about individual ships, which are very personal. For the Feds, the Defiant is incredibly fast and brimming with firepower. For the Klingons, it’s hard to top the Vor’cha for pure muscle. The Romulans have the D’deridex, which is simply a juggernaut. For the Borg, well is there really a choice there? Showing up with a Borg Tactical Cube is the ultimate expression of power.
