E3 2006: 'Urban Chaos: Riot Response' (PS2) - Impressions

Submitted by thankeeka on May 10, 2006 - 3:49pm. Game Preview

The game has you play the role of what looks like some specialized riot police force. As the game begins you are presented with your missions, which is to head down the street to help some other medical officer who is being stalked and kept trapped by the bad guys…a bunch of hockey mask wearing Jason clones who do everything from come at you with machetes to shooting firearms at you to throwing Molotov cocktails.

To face these enemies you do have a nice array of weapons. You’ve got an awesome shotgun that can really get the job done, you have got a machine gun which can rattle off a nice stream of bullets in one nice spurt. You’ve also got the pistol, but who really ever uses the pistol anyways.

Though enemy AI is always a good thing, the enemies sadly seemed to be lacking in the mental capacity. Sure, they surprised me a time or two by dropping down from an overhang, but generally they just run straight at you. Idiots meet shotgun…shotgun go BOOM!

One thing neat about the game is that since Halo everyone wants a rechargeable armor supply. Well Urban Chaos is no different, but this time you actually use a shield…an actual bulletproof glass shield.

One feature that could be quite annoying or really fun depending on the length of time spent with the game is the slow-mo deaths that happen when you perform actions such as a headshot for example. So as soon as that bullet hits that guy’s head it will turn slow so you can relish the kill.

It was actually quite easy to run through the levels, using the shield, and capping the bad guys…and this is coming from someone who has never laid their hand on the PS2 system. So the controls and movement were very fluid and nothing stuttered at all.

This was the first game I played of the show and was pleasantly surprised to have fun with it. The odd thing is that nobody was standing around to play it…why I don’t know. I would’ve played longer, but I needed to go get some more content.
