Women are such geeks, and I couldn't be happier to say that. For far too long, generally women haven't been looked at in this way, but with now both men and women embracing the term geek and making it a badge of honor, they are taking back the name and making it something less than derogatory. Here is an interesting article about women gamer geeks and more.
The field of gaming posed tough challenges, as well.
Quinn Norton is a skilled LARP (live action role playing) designer (think Civil War enthusiasts enacting a new battle). But, she said, "Part of my skill appeared to be putting up with a ton of harassment directed at my characters and me. ... I had to be able to handle abuse and sexual innuendo in huge doses. It was a requirement."
Another game designer, Mara Poulsen, found to her dismay that producers wanted more sex than realism. One figure, a woman fighter wearing plate armor, was turned into a babe in a chain-mail bikini. (A warning to those of delicate sensibilities; one essay on computer sex makes for lively but explicit reading.)
Newitz describes her writers as women of today and tomorrow. "They adore genomics, are obsessed with blogging, hack their own sex toys, and aren't afraid to match wits with men or computers."
Get ready, world.
