Online Gamer In China Making $50 Per Hour

Submitted by thankeeka on July 6, 2007 - 9:51am. General News

Okay, that does it, this is the final update you'll ever see from me on Killer Betties. I'm going to go buy World of Warcraft, and with Lord of the Rings Online already on my computer, I'm going to just play 24/7 and make me some change like this. $50 an hour for just selling gold and loot!

From the article:

"The buyers pay real cash for virtual gold. They have proper jobs but not enough time for games," said 21-year old Zhao Mengyuan in an interview with AFP. "In just five hours playing one time... I made 2,000 yuan (260 dollars)," he says.

Chinese gold farming, which exports online gold, potions, and other commodities to American and South Korean gamers, is a full-time job for an estimated 500,000 to one million Chinese twenty-somethings. While a majority of gold farmers make much less than $50 per hour, a good gold farmer can make $210 a month, almost double the per capita monthly disposable income of some Chinese cities ($131).
