When I was at E3, I don't remember Nintendo's booth being a barely lit space, but then again, maybe I was too sucked into my own world, thinking, "I'm holding a Wii controller!" The point is, reports have come out to suggest that the Wii's sensor could be affected by sunlight in ways that would screw up control. What does Nintendo have to say on the matter?
From the article:
When we asked Nintendo for a statement regarding the Wii Remote sensor and its sensitivity to sunlight, we were told, "Our testing thus far shows no great risk of light interference when playing a game that relies on the pointer and sensor bar." However, since the Wii sensor is a light-based device, direct exposure to sunlight will hinder its abilities to sense the Wii Remote. Then again, how many people have their TVs in direct sunlight? Most gamers play in dimly lit areas, and if you did have your TV in direct sunlight (the remote sensor sits on top of your television), the glare would make viewing your screen a real pain.
Also, while sunlight can have an effect on the sensor, you don't have to play the Wii in pitch darkness. According to Nintendo, you can play in a well-lit area with no problems; it's only direct sunlight that can start to make things go south. With that in mind, we guess if you pointed a bright enough light directly at the sensor you could recreate the effects of exposure to direct sunlight, but we have no idea why anyone would want to do that. So what does all this mean to you? Probably nothing, as most people have their televisions in an area that's not bathed in sunlight, plus, there is also a marvelous invention called the curtain. Perhaps you've heard of it.
