Women are taking over gaming. Though we've talked about it before as have other people, online is becoming a bigger boom for women gamers, and though some think the idea of having things like women only servers is ultimately a bad idea, some think it is a good alternative. Here is an article looking at how Indian companies are looking to woo, not the men, but women to their games.
Hey dude, move over. You may take humungous pride in your clan — but it’s the gals that are attracting the attention of gaming companies. It’s being said that they have ‘huge potential’. With women actually driving some segments of the gaming market overseas, Indian companies too are now gearing up with plans to woo them in a big way.
Online gaming portal Zapak has set up zapakgirls.com which is already live in the beta phase. The market launch is expected in the next 10 days. This offering can also be reached through the women’s section at zapak.com.
Meanwhile, Indiagames which is launching a gaming tournament in the first week of March in Mumbai, will have a separate set of matches for women. Reliance World, which also hosts nationwide tourneys at its game parlours, called GameBoxes, every year, will have a special one for the moms who tag along with their kids and then watch attentively as the youngsters play on. “That’s our challenge — that the moms sit next to the kids.
So we’re planning offerings that are tailormade for them. Worldwide, women are a huge market. While the male/female ratio for video games is 2:1, in online casual gaming women lead — they’re a whopping 64%,” says Sunil Buch, head, marketing, Reliance World. The GameBoxes therefore, have quite a few games that they feel will especially attract women.
