'Build-a-Lot 2: Town of the Year' Review (PC)

Submitted by thankeeka on May 9, 2008 - 11:41am. Exclusive Game Review

Red HousesI'm typically not a big fan of micromanagement casual games, but one that surprised me with its quality when it was first released was Build-a-Lot. It was great to be land baron, buying up houses for sell, improving them, turning them for profit, and then buying up all the land in the area. Build-a-Lot 2: Town of the Year continues the same trends and gameplay from the last game, but yet has also added a few new features as well. Sigh, if only I had the money to really wheel and deal in real life.

EA Sports Making Wii Fit For Bored Women

Submitted by thankeeka on May 8, 2008 - 7:09am. Females in Gaming News

The Wii is probably the most accessible system out there for women looking to get into videogames for the first time. Wii Fit is going to be a huge draw in general, and when you have someone like Tina Yothers doing ads for the game during episodes of Celebrity Bootcamp on VH1 it should come as no surprise that Nintendo is heavily targeting women with the game. Peter Moore is looking at also using the Wii Board for EA's own fitness game, and women seem to be their main target.

Zero Punctuation: Mailbag Showdown

Submitted by thankeeka on May 8, 2008 - 7:00am. General News

I like to think my reviews spot-on and I tell the truth how I see it when it comes to game reviews. I'm sure I could be more critical or sarcastic, but I'll leave that to Yahtzee - the writer for Zero Punctuation - who I think is absolutely the best videogame reviewer in the business. This week, changing things up a little, he's decided to answer some reader emails about his recent review of Super Smash Bros. Brawl...and boy is he rough on them. Ah, just the way I like it. Watch the hilarious video.

UK Mum: DS Turned My Kids into Monsters

Submitted by thankeeka on May 8, 2008 - 6:52am. General News

Should we blame the government? Or blame society? Or should we blame the images on TV? No, blame videogames...blame videogames. It seems that no matter where you look there is always someone claiming videogames are the downfall of our civilization and are the reason behind all of the world's woes. The latest story coming out has one UK mom claiming about how the Nintendo DS is turning her kids into monsters and making them dysfunctional.

'Dancing With The Stars' Review (PC)

Submitted by thankeeka on May 6, 2008 - 3:36pm. Exclusive Game Review

Celebrity VoteI always enjoyed So You Think You Can Dance more than Dancing With The Stars, but over these last two seasons I've found some joy in watching the drama of the show. I pull for Cheryl Burke each season because I love her so. I'm riveted by Cristián de la Fuente – who I'd never heard of before this – and how he tore a muscle, is dancing with only one useable arm right now, and had the best performances of his dancing career this week. Okay, so I'm addicted to the show now, but sadly not this game at all.

Glenn Beck: Video Game Bloggers Are “Losers”

Submitted by thankeeka on May 6, 2008 - 10:54am. General News

Sigh, I'm feeling so depressed today. I woke up in a funk already this morning, went cruising around trying to find some interesting news, and the next thing I know I'm stumbling across someone calling me - and all videogame bloggers - a loser. That really hurts my feelings! Okay, not really, because truth be told I'd never heard of Glenn Beck before he started saying stupid stuff anyways. So what has got Mr. Beck so angry with videogame bloggers? Game Politics has the story.

'Slingo Quest Hawaii' Review (PC)

Submitted by thankeeka on May 1, 2008 - 9:01am. Exclusive Game Review

SlingtasticOnce upon a time I thought bingo was only a pastime old people could enjoy, but after one long road trip to a casino and a few hours of playing, however, my mind was changed and I had a blast. Since then, sadly, there hasn't been a bingo experience that could even compare to that one. Trying to capture the gameplay of bingo in a game is like trying to find a great game of bingo – it's only as fun as the experience and people surrounding it. Along comes Slingo Quest Hawaii, a bingo-esque game, which manages to capture the spirit of bingo and transform it into something that can be enjoyed by yourself.

'Magi-Nation: Battle for the Moonlands' Review (PC)

Submitted by thankeeka on April 29, 2008 - 7:11am. Exclusive Game Review

Life SnagUntil Nintendo gets on the idea that could dethrone World of Warcraft, the closest you’ll find to a Pokemon MMO is the recently released Magi-Nation, a game that has you traversing a series of worlds, battling monsters, and using them for your own personal bodyguards. Though there are some nags here and there to mire the experience, fans of both the franchise and those looking for a new (and free) fix might find what they’re looking for with Magi-Nation: Battle for the Moonlands.

'Teenage Zombies: Invasion of the Alien Brain Thingys' – Review (DS)

Submitted by thankeeka on April 28, 2008 - 8:41am. Exclusive Game Review

Fins AttacksBrains! Brains! Brraaaaainnnnns! Considering the fact that zombies love to eat brains and one of the classic sci-fi enemies are the giant floating brains, it’s amazing that a concept such as Teenage Zombies has never been done before given how making a story about the two would mesh so well together. Though Teenage Zombies isn’t as grand as the concept itself, it’s still a fun and hilarious game for the relatively short time it lasts.

Study: Casual Video Games Demonstrate Ability to Relieve Stress, Improve Mood: Potential Clinical Significance Highlighted

Submitted by thankeeka on April 28, 2008 - 8:22am. General News

GREENVILLE, NC and SEATTLE, WA – April 28, 2008 — East Carolina University’s Department of Recreation and Leisure Studies today revealed the results of a six-month long, randomized, controlled study that measured the stress-relieving and other mood-lifting effects of so-called “casual” video games. The three puzzle and word games used in the study, Bejeweled® 2, Peggle™ and Bookworm™ Adventures, are all made by PopCap Games, the leading developer and publisher of casual video games. (PopCap underwrote the study and provided copies of the games for research purposes.) The hypotheses were tested using state-of-the-art technologies and methodologies to measure heart-rate variability (HRV), electroencephalography (EEG) and subjects’ mood states pre- and post-activity (POMS). The study yielded significant findings in several areas while identifying potential therapeutic applications of casual games as a means of addressing serious mental and physical disorders. Due to the significance of the findings and their implications in health promotion, disease prevention and treatment, East Carolina University’s Psychophysiology Lab is planning to start clinical trials in the fall to determine the efficacy of these games and their prescriptive parameters.

'Europa Universalis: Rome' Review (PC)

Submitted by Chris Stavros on April 25, 2008 - 6:30am. Exclusive Game Review

A Son Is BornThe glory that was Rome has long excited the imagination of gamers the world over for many years. How a small and insignificant city-state could rise to be the premier empire of the Western World is a story epic in its grandeur and makes the ideal subject of a computer game. There are of course no shortages of games that try to portray this era of history, and the latest is another in the long line of Paradox’s historical game, EU: Rome.

Chairman of the Boards

Submitted by thankeeka on April 25, 2008 - 5:52am. General News

1up.com now has up an interesting article looking at whether people involved in the game industry actually listen to players on message boards and either their complaints or praise for a game. I'm inclined to believe the voice of the people actually matter for the most part when it comes to developers trying to please their demographic, but I've seen enough complaining on message boards too to know that not everything complained about always gets fixed or taken seriously.
