GOSUB 60 is a small, independent company that has decided to make a big impact by stepping up to address the growing number of women in the gaming industry. This year, the company launched a game called Bliss, creatively designed specifically with a female demographic in mind.
Amazingly, the market of women gamers is still largely neglected, yet, according to the Mobile Game Report for Q1 2006, women account for 72% of the total revenue generated from wireless puzzle and strategy games. Founded in 2003 by Josh Hartwell and Paul Bolten, GOSUB 60 develops and publishes software for wireless carriers stretching across more than 20 different countries. One of the few companies in the industry to be able to claim a team over 50% of which is female, they already have an edge on the market.
Kellie Hartwell, VP Business Development for the company, explains, "For me the inspiration for this product came when I was reviewing company stats." According to a PR Newswire press release, a survey from mobile market authority M:Metrics in October of 2006 revealed that GOSUB 60 ranked 8th mobile games publisher in the United States. "I had this realization that we had influence," Kellie says, "our art and text and game-play was in the hands of more people than I could have ever believed possible. So what if we used our powers for good? That's what started the fury of almost kinetic brainstorming activity that led us to cause marketing with Breast Cancer Research. It was such a cool thing to be making a sound business decision with a cause that could potentially help save lives."
