Ok, ok. I'll admit it. I have a problem. I spend far too many hours in my life wasting them away in pointless diversions. These diversions go by the name of Shockwave Gameblast games. I'm hooked -- every Tuesday I go check what they've added and, if nothing new has been added, I browse over the list of over 100 games to see what else sounds interesting -- provided I've tired of the game I chose to play that previous week. Gameblast is a subscription service for a collection of casual games that encompasses everything from word and puzzle games to quickie action games. The games are the type that will waste hours in your day without you even realizing it. Here are a few of the ones I especially like: Diner Dash casts the player as Flo, a former corporate shill who has abandoned that world to open her own business -- a restaurant. There are 50 levels in the story mode and a non-story mode which involves staying alive as long as possible. 5 different restaurants are unlocked through story mode. Customers enter the restaurant and must be seated, their order taken, their food served to them and, finally, a check delivered to their table. Keeping the customers happy is critical. If a customer becomes unhappy, they will leave and a monetary penalty will be assessed. Each level has a financial goal. Moving up levels (or upgrading in the continuous mode) will add bonuses, like more tables, a drink machine to increase happiness and a podium which allows Flo to entertain the customers standing in line, keeping them happy. It is a very fast paced and challenging game. Keeping track of all the customers can quickly become overwhelming, in a very satisfying way. This is a game that will eat away the hours. Chicktionary is a word game. Players are given 7 letter words and have to make as many words out of those 7 levels as possible. There is a timed mode and an untimed mode. Before each level, players choose how many words they will make -- the more words they choose the higher the bonus. If that number of words is not met, the game ends. There is a bonus awarded if the player finds all of the words of a certain number of letters. There are often more words than indicated, so meeting the goal can be done without finding all the words indicated. Chicktionary is a fun game that will haunt the sleep of those who play. It will become second nature to quickly list off all the words another word can make in one's mind. I'm waiting for Chicktionary 2, with 8 letter words or some other variation. This is a fun, short game that challenges players to compare two nearly identical pictures and find the differences between the two. There are three game modes, a pyramid challenge, timed infinite play and practice. It's fast-paced and fun, but there is a limited number of pictures and when they start to repeat, the game gets tiring. However, it’s a must play for a few hours at least. There's also the possibility of more pictures being added.
