Editor Sees Gaming League as Symbol of Cultural Decline

I wondered if he's afraid of heights, what with sitting so high and mighty on his holier than thou throne. I love that it isn't drugs, war, or anything really serious that's going to be the downfall of America. No, instead, the sign of America's apocalypse is because CBS is going to air videogame tournaments on television. Quick! Everyone run to your bunkers and pray we all make it out in one piece! I personally fail to view these gamers as athletes, but the end of times...hardly.

I must admit, I don’t find competitive gaming leagues very exciting.

Neither does Eric Greene (left), an editor with the Battle Creek Enquirer. The difference is that Greene views the rise of video gaming as a sign of impending cultural slippage:

I regret to inform you that, finally, officially, unmistakably, we’re nothing more than a society of boobs… CBS will begin broadcasting video game tournaments…

I envision two sweaty-palmed, pimple-faced 14-year-olds casting virtual spells on each other in the “World of Warcraft,” and millions of people watching at home, ignoring all familial, spiritual and hygienic needs… And with that, we blissful and carefree Americans may have sunk below the point of no return.
