E3 2006: Wii Sports' Tennis (Wii) - Impressions

Submitted by thankeeka on May 11, 2006 - 9:46pm. Game Preview

I’ve always been a fan of tennis. The pageantry, the finesse, the cursing…okay, maybe that only happens when John McEnroe is playing during the fortnight a tennis tournament usually takes up, but now you can play tennis right in the confines of your own house. Remember when mom said not to play ball in the house…forget what your momma told you.

Wii Sports’ tennis is the easiest game to appreciate in the Wii lineup here at E3 as it allows you the most freedom to just let loose with your Wii skills and you don’t have to do it easy.

Thanks to an appointment I got to skip a three hour line JUST to get into the area where the Wii actually is. All I can say is, “Nah nah nah nah!” I’m sorry line waiters…love ya just the same. The Wii Sports’ tennis was the first game I got to play using the Wii remote and this thrilled me as the Nintendo press conference’s finale with the doubles tennis was the highlight of the show. So me and the other person on the booth tour got to cut in line again (being a writer does have its perks) and got our hands on the Wii.

RVL_hardware_ss08.jpgThere are basically only two movements to do: 1) Swing back to forward, and 2) Flick the wrist up and then down. The wrist flipping comes when you have to serve…think of what it looks like when real people serve and you’ll see that it mimics the process perfectly. However, sadly, the flipping didn’t handle perfectly when I tried. I sometimes didn’t apparently flip my wrist hard enough or either it wouldn’t register my downward hit on the serve…so that sucked. However, the swinging forward motion always registered, so that was fun. Oh, I beat the guy by the way. Would you really believe anything else?

During Versus play you control both team members and you make them move left to right by using the analog stick on the “chuk.”

Overall, although it was simple in graphical look and command, it is easily my favorite of the Wii games I got to play. Yes, I felt like an idiot watching people watching me swing a fake racket, but dang if it wasn’t fun. This is what the Wii is going to be all about.
