E3 2006: 'Resistance: Fall of Man' (PS3) - Impressions

The TroopsWhen people ask me what my favorite game at E3 was, I can't help but come back to Resistance: Fall of Man time and time again. Perhaps I'm a sucker for aliens. Perhaps I'm a sucker for first person shooters. Or perhaps I just see something special when it comes along.

Out of all the PS3 games that were playable this is easily my favorite of the bunch. Resistance: Fall of a Man is an FPS that looks to be set in an alternate history WWII that takes place against a horde of evil aliens instead of German Nazis. The game reminds me of someone taking Call of Duty 2 and merging it with Halo to get this awesome result.

The preview I got to play showcased this outside environment that was purely amazing what with all the great looking debris, people running here and there, and ambience type things such as planes flying over. Really, this game showcases the power of the PS3 wonderfully. I never saw any slowdown, jaggies, pop-up, fog or any other graphical deals that tell you something isn't that great. Resistance: Fall of Man was just great.

The outdoor environment was kind of smallish in a way as it was pretty linear, but it appeared so open that you hardly notice until afterwards just how scripted and A to B it all is. So you'll start running over this beautiful looking gray debris, you'll hide behind cover, and you'll pop yourself out to take shots at the enemies. The enemies are these hulking monster type deals that look like they have yellow syringes sticking out of their backs. Besides these smart aliens that took cover just like you, you've also got crab/spider like monsters that like to scurry for you. The spiders weren't much of a threat since they just crawl at you and a shot with the shotgun is all you need to take them down. Though the spiders were easily beaten, the game was quite challenging thanks to the enemy AI, as I couldn't just charge headfirst into a battle and attack because I'd die each and every time.

The AliensYour weapons are fairly typical for an FPS with things like machine guns, shotguns, and grenades. There was one weapon that was a bit unique, though after thinking about it, it was basically Halo's needler weapon in which this red dart type ammunitions hone in on your enemies for shots.

It wasn't just outdoor battles, because there was also a level inside that looked to be a rundown laboratory where the action was just as fierce and even more tight as the corridors meant you were closer to your enemies than ever before. Also, the objects in the environments reacted to things you did, so lights and glass would explode, things would flip over, and it really looked and felt like you were doing battle.

The controls were also smooth and didn't require any adjustment to jump in and start playing, which is something for me to say since I've never played a PS2/PS3 type controller until this day and I took to it like a duck to water. If someone asks me what the PS3 is like I'll simply point to Resistance: Fall of Man and say – that!
