For as long as there have been videogames there have been women playing them. And while one might believe the trend of scantily clad women promoting videogames is a new thing, the trend has actually been around for a long time, including the era of such games as Pac-man. But women have never been drawn to the sex themed advertising that surrounds many titles. Why is that? The GGL looks at the issue to figure out why sex doesn't sale to women.
As with everything else, art imitates life. While the movies, music and magazines were starting to show the shift in culture, so were our video games. More games were beginning to be made that played-off of the male fantasy of sex, drugs and rock 'n roll.
Now, think back to your youth. What games are the FIRST to pop into your memory? Was it Leisure Suit Larry? How about Lara Croft? While there will always be the exception, my bet is that most of you would come back with titles like Pong, Pac-Man, Mario, Paperboy, Zelda, Duck Hunt and Sonic.
We didn’t need a gorgeous babe dressed as Princess Peach licking the Nintendo 64 to help us decide on our purchase. It was all about game play. And that game play attracted the boys and girls.
Poll your female friends and ask them how many of them use to play Mario. How about Pac man? Sonic? Or maybe even Myst? These games were simple, fun and easy to pick up and just go with. It wasn’t until the dawn of over-sexed and hyper-violent games that women gamers started dropping off the map. It was no longer just a casual hobby… gaming was getting serious. Women began to lose interest.
