Long Walks On The Beach, And Slaying Horde

I just found out there’s a World Of WarCraft dating site, www.datecraft.com, where WoW gamers can meet other players for off-line amusements. The site’s pretty new, still in beta, but already has quite a few users. User profiles tell their faction, race, level and in-game professions, as well as the usual location/job/maritial status info.

As goofy as this sounds, sharing a hobby like WarCraft is actually a great way to begin a relationship. You already have something pretty major in common, and you won’t find out a few weeks or months into the relationship that your new SO likes to stay up all night questing. (I also think how a guy plays an RPG, especially a multiplayer one, can tell you everything you need to know about his boyfriend abilities.)

What do you think? A place for lonely and sad gamers to meet other sad and lonely gamers? Or a surefire step toward Draenai-themed weddings?

Lyndon LaRouche Claims Videogame Coverup in VA Tech Commission Report

0
by on September 4, 2007 at 12:18 pm

Yes, that’s got to be it! It’s so much easier to think that a whole gaming entertainment industry somehow managed to work its way into this police investigation to make it show that the VA Tech shooting wasn’t because of games. Yep, it couldn’t have been the fact that games just weren’t an issue – that’s too easy of an answer.

From the article:

As GamePolitics reported yesterday, a panel appointed by Gov. Tim Kaine found no evidence that killer Seung Hui Cho played violent video games. In fact, the only title specifically identified as being played by Cho was Sonic the Hedgehog.

LaRouche, however, finds “grave and frightening clues” in the report:

Seung-Hui Cho was exactly the kind of violent-media and video game addict about which LPAC has been warning…

Yet the Virginia Tech Panel went out of its way to understate, or ignore Cho’s deep involvement in violent Internet culture, from video games, to underground movies like the violent “Old Boy.”

Commenting today on the release of the panel’s report, Lyndon LaRouche said, “This commission came under major political pressure to keep out what is known about Cho’s involvement with video games–they obviously didn’t want to offend somebody.

Videogames Fight Corruption In China?

0
by on August 3, 2007 at 1:46 am

I’ve already talked about Chinese Heroes, a new videogame to teach ethics and values, but China’s got a brand-new, free-to-download videogame called “The Incorruptible Warrior.” In it, you play the only honest official in China. You level, gain gold and XP, work on your magic skills and improve your weaponry, and other typical RPG things, while you run around killing, maiming and torturing the corrupt officials. And their girlfriends. And kids.

I’m not sure how to class this game… Fantasy? Sim?

The game is free to download right here but I haven’t played it since my Chinese is more “Where is the train station?” and less “Excuse me, but are you the kept mistress of a corrupt government official?”

American McGee Revisits Classic Tales in New Episodic Game

by on May 30, 2007 at 1:41 pm

GameTap, the first-of-its-kind broadband entertainment network from Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.), announced today the latest addition to the GameTap Originals line-up, American McGee’s Grimm. The title cements GameTap’s leadership position as a digital publisher and pioneer in episodic games. The 24 episode series will debut in the spring of 2008.

“American McGee is one of the best known and most dynamic developers in the industry today and Grimm is the perfect fit with our GameTap Originals brand,” said Ricardo Sanchez, GameTap’s VP of content. “American is really exploring the potential of episodic game development. Adding this exciting new title to our list of already successful episodic game titles shows our commitment to this proven format.”

In keeping with American’s distinct development style on his smash hit game American McGee’s Alice, fans can expect the same twisted treatment of children’s classics, in addition to a fantastical art style, and groundbreaking gameplay elements. American McGee’s Grimm is a narrative-driven, action-adventure game which immerses the player in a world built around some of the best known tales from the Brothers Grimm, including Rapunzel, Rumplestiltskin, Little Red Riding Hood, and Snow White.

“My interpretation of these classic fables will provide gamers with an entertaining and interactive way of experiencing how the stories were originally meant to unfold,” said American McGee, creative director for Spicy Horse. “The ‘chapters’ inherently lend themselves to the new episodic model that GameTap has perfected.”

American McGee’s Grimm is a story-driven action-adventure game. The player interacts with a compelling collection of vividly drawn characters inhabiting a world built around twisted takes on the best-known tales in Western fiction. The game combines familiar exploration and questing conventions with a thematically inspired fighting mechanic based on the notion that “words are weapons”.

Players will experience the game in a sandbox world which contains missions assigned in episodic fashion. Game and narrative concepts equivalent to TV cliffhangers will be used to create game play and story interest to encourage players to keep up with new releases.

Funcom Reveals ‘The Secret World’

by on May 11, 2007 at 2:17 pm

Durham, USA – May 11th, 2007 – From the creators of ‘Age of Conan’, ‘Anarchy Online’, ‘The Longest Journey’ and ‘Dreamfall’ comes a brave new massively multiplayer online role–playing game for the PC and Xbox 360. Taking place on our earth, in our times, ‘The Secret World’ (TSW) is inspired by history and mythology, modern conspiracy theories and ancient mysteries.

For there really is a world within ours, a secret world, where magic exists, monsters roam and ancient forces are fighting for the dominance of earth. It is a world of legendary stories, ageless conflicts and powerful cabals. In this world, even modern cities hide secrets. In this world, players can take part in the greatest conspiracies of our age, and battle the forces of darkness across the world and throughout time.

“We started envisioning this contemporary online world more than ten years ago, and as the years passed the ideas grew and improved,“ said Ragnar Tørnquist, Producer and Director on ‘The Secret World’. “We always wanted a different kind of online world, something scary and contemporary, something deeper and closer to our reality. Our goal now is to create a detailed world where players feel empowered and part of something big, something mystical and epic.”

“We believe there are millions of gamers out there who want to explore something beyond traditional fantasy and sci-fi games,“ said Trond Arne Aas, CEO of Funcom. “’The Secret World’ is just that – a fantastic new setting that will fuel the imagination of online gamers, and keep players busy for years. We have a golden opportunity to bring something fresh and exciting to the genre, and we firmly believe the game is an ideal extension of Funcom’s MMO portfolio.”

‘The Secret World’ has been in development since last summer and the game is in a playable state. It is produced at the Funcom studios in Oslo and Beijing. A release date is not being announced at this point, but players are already getting involved in the fast-growing community. Through a complex web-based mystery launched on May 6th, players are being led to a series of websites, including www.DarkDaysAreComing.com, where – after solving a puzzle – concept art from the game is being unveiled.

As a gamer you can become a member of the first wave community, and through pioneer forums you can discuss and explore the intriguing backstory. To access the forums and learn more about the mystery make sure you check out: www.darkdemonscrygaia.com
