In news that seems like a rumor of a rumor, it appears that maybe, just maybe, Apple could be looking into jumping into the videogame console market somewhere in the near future. Just imagine those Mac versus PC commercials with Justin Long, with the PC guy dressed up like Master Chief and the Mac guy dressed up as whatever mascot they get.

The latest comes courtesy of Prudential analyst Jesse Tortora and GamesIndustry.biz, who posted a few transcripts from his letters to clients online. Tortora believes that Apple Computers could be setting itself up to compete with Microsoft and Sony for dominance over the living room -- and that a new game console device might be the just the trick.

"We think the videogame market represents a distinct possibility for Apple, especially considering that it recently announced the availability of videogames for its iPod through its iTunes store," he said.

"The game console device could be morphed out of some combination of the MacMini and iTV, while the handheld player could be developed as an enhancement for a future version of the widescreen iPod."
