Women play games...it's a fact. Killer Betties should be proof enough that women like to game just as much as the next person, and now info is coming out that one of the largest formats women are being drawn to are the casual online videogames.
The growth is largely from women, many of them 35 and older. "It's a new group who hasn't gamed before," said Michael Goodman, a senior analyst at the Yankee Group. At MSN Games, Microsoft's online gaming Web site, about 70 percent of the 9 million users are women, and more than 50 percent of them are 35 and older, said Lisa Sikora, group marketing manager for Microsoft casual games.
That demographic often is overlooked because women don't talk about their game-playing habits. "Women don't admit it," Sikora said.
From a series of focus groups, Microsoft found that women found the games a welcome distraction that allowed them to be productive in the long run. "Games become a place they can take 20-minute break. You can jump in and out of the game," Sikora said. "It helps them get refocused. We're calling it brain food. They're still working their minds."
